There is no easy answer to this question. Beeswax does not hold up. Linseed, 
though edible (when purchased in a food store), may not be when smoked off.

I can suggest shellac. It is even used on kids toys, disolves with alcohol 
and is long lasting. I would tell the customer to remove the shellac with 
acohol, such as vodka, before using the utensil.
