Buy a ruler that is metric on one side and imperial on the other starting 
from the same end. Check the measurement on the given side and look on the 
other side for a quick conversion. I have a 60" dress makers tape that is 
great for this.

  I have found it
frustrating that although the information seems to be there, detailed
technique is lacking. Not to mention that all the measurements are in
imperial and not metric.
