I've used stone gravel with pretty good success for removing burrs,
rust and corrosion. Put it in with the parts into a rubber bucket
(sometimes add a gallon or two of water) and roll it for few hours. The
parts have to be dried immediately or they rust real quickly.

Steel scrap and slugs an inch or less would be ideal...need several
hundred lbs.
