I think a spreader bar is what you mean rather than a spreader chain.

For heavy loads and added stability two long bars would solve the bending 
under weight and binding the spit concern. (not expressed but existing in a 
single spit set up)

The woodcut posted is what was posted last time we discussed this and the 
impracticality of that device as illustrated was discussed as well. There 
are a number ot technical problems with the woodcut illustration but the 
spirit of the device is obvious.

While my original thought was closer to what Justin posted I like your ring 
"dog" design much better. Ring "dogs" work really well, we used them for 
lifting devices and rod holders on the drill rig. The concept is commonly 
found on pipe clamps. The ones using a desired length of black iron pipe for 
the body, not clamps for holding pipe.
