Andrew:
a good value in anvils are the cast tool steel ones
that Euroanvils (http://www.euroanvils.net/) and Old
World Anvils (http://www.oldworldanvils.com/) sell.
If you want a really good anvil, get a Peddinghaus
from Kayne and Son (http://www.blacksmithsdepot.com/)
with regard to gas forges, bigger really is better.
There are a number of things that I make that because
of thier shape would take a really big forge. A lot
of folks make thier own gas forges and if you search
around on the internet, you'll find plans and
instructions.
