Lon Humphrey sent me pics. Gee, Lon, looks like it spent 10 years in
the rain. What happened to it? Did you ever have the lever and
what-not?
Lon's forge doesn't have all the parts either but I was able to deduce
from Lon's pics that the previous owner of mine had wound the belts on
the wrong way. The short lever with the ball is supposed to drive the
pulley on the *up* stroke. Some kind of vertical post or bracket
mounts on the rim of the forge bowl and supports (the middle of) a
horizontal lever -- probably essentially just a stick. Then pulling
down on the stick pulls a rod or rope or something that's attached to
the other end of the stick. That lifts the short lever on the
belt-and-ratchet mechanism. Gravity returns the short lever to the
down position.
The big pulley on mine is missing one spoke. Another spoke is cracked
through and the rim is cracked through. Being less than confident
about brazing a thin cast iron ring, I made a couple of little fitted
aluminum patches and bolted them on with tiny bolts. Ugly but will
keep it from busting worse.
