With the shorter handle and gripping close to the head you get better 
accuracy with each hammer blow.

Yes, with a longer handle  you can achieve greater hammer head velocity and 
thereby greater force, but you loose some of your hammer contol.  At least I 
do.   Perhpas, if I was hammering everyday, I would be able to develope 
superb hammer control with a long handle.  Unfortunately, as a hobbist, I do 
not get anywhere as much forge time as I would like.  The short handle fits 
better into my intermittent forging schedule.
