Might work Justin.  What you describe is the tool steel most likely going 
"hot short" at the high temperature.  Also might try heating real hot 
followed by a shot of water or blast of air to quench it causing it to 
crack.  Glad it is not my  problem today -- but something we could all run 
into at any time.
