How big can you afford?
The only serous issue with sharing space in a barn is fire. You must be
absolutely isolated from the hay and it's dust. I wouldn't even put in a
connecting door.
A lot is going to depend on what you do and what you want to do in the
future. A bladesmith doesn't need nearly as much room as someone making
railings and gates.
Another factor is how much and what kinds of equipment and tools you
have/want. If all I'm using is hammer, anvil, forge, vise and hand tools a
12' x 12' space is almost huge. Add a bench and a few power tools and it's
pretty crowded.
I'm in the process of putting up a 30' x 40' steel shop and the actual
smithing area will be about 14' x 16' but I'll have open space for those
times I need more. (till I get it filled up with STUFF that is. <grin>)
Lots of electrical outlets, LOTS. Light, lots of light. Storage, warm and
cold is good and a hazmat locker for pickles and patina chemicals. Outside
propane locker, char/coal bunker with perhaps interior access. Lift capacity
is really handy, a well placed jib boom crane or two maybe a rolling "A"
frame hoist. An engine hoist/cherry picker is another handy item or
alternative.
There are so many variables it's a pretty tough question without more info.

it ain't real.
Wrought iron is.
