[TheForge] OT biodiesel

I suspect a bit of innumeracy here. What this statement says is equivalent to saying that all the plant matter (or did this refer only to crop matter) in California, dried, is about the same weight as six weeks supply of oil (including that needed to generate electricity?).

Okay, maybe add a factor between 1 and 2 to account for the greater BTU value of oil than of alcohols. Still, I'm dubious of this.

Anyone have any numbers for the amount of oil used in the country in six weeks?

How about the biomass of California?

The problem is there isn't enough biomass available to make enough
biodiesel to supply our current energy needs. If you took all the biomass
in California and converted it with 100% efficientcy, you could supply the
energy needs of the US for 6 weeks.
