Well, Ralph, I went out and rooted up the old 16" tubes that I had cut
up to make bandsaw tires.  I now have tire tube washers on both ends
of the main vise handle.  Like I said, the obvious take a little
longer.

Instead of a slit (as suggested by Chris) I used a gasket punch to
make a round hole.  Less likely to tear later, I reckoned.  Seems to be
fine.
