Because a ball looks good and it's ergonomic. I'll give Jeff a pass if he
welds a collar on, but he still has to forge it into some semblance of a
ball. I wouldn't use a coil spring either because it's too much trouble to
get it straight and smooth. By now Jeff has a large portion of the junkyard
so he'll find something. Get on him, he enjoys the attention... Ron C

  I have seen some handles that just had a collar welded around the 
handle. There really isn't any reason it has to be a ball. Coil spring 
would not be my choice for the project. Especially if forge welding was 
part of the plan. Jeff said the original looked like mild steel. It 
would probably still be a good handle if Jeff would have heated it 
before trying to straighten it. Not getting on your ass Jeff I have 
broke my share of stuff. Maybe more than my share. )
