[TheForge] Shopping for a welding helmet

I have one of the HF solar powered helmets and have been very happy with
it. I had one of the battery powered ones at first, and it didn't work
as well, for some reason it was just a lot harder to see out of. I've
used the solar powered one during my welding class. I've have welded up
to eight hours or so in a day, all with this helmet, and have never had
sore eyes. I've dropped it, from about head-high, and it keep working
fine. They're regularly on sale for $49 or so. For that price, I'd
recommend picking one up... Then if you don't like it you can have it as
an extra.

The only problem with it is the plastic lens covers are not the standard
size. Not a big deal, though, as you can just buy a larger set and cut
them to fit.

No matter which one you get, auto darkening is worth it.

There's been a few threads on rec.crafts.metalworking and
sci.engr.joining.welding about them, if you'd like more info.

I'm shopping for an auto-darkening MIG Welding helmet for my son, (he's
the welder in the family). Does anyone have advice about the Harbor
Freight helmets? I see there are three different models on sale now.
91214 is the solar powered Flame design. 47996 is the Hands free sensor
round top (kind of old style look). 46092 looks like the plane jane.
They are all about the same price.
