Harry Turtledove told me how this works... Somebody reads the book... does
a 10 page synopsis, and shops it to an agent, who takes a one page
abridgement of the synopsis to the producer who sells the idea and then
takes the abridgement, gives it to a screen writer to make a
script... The author gets paid, but has ,usually, nothing to do with the
movie....
This is how David Brin's excellent book, "The Postman" became Kevin
Costner's "The Postman"... an ok movie.
