Hi,
I would define the 'crap' as being an object that can be easily cranked
out, has some "cool" factor and will sell for under $20. That seems to
be the top of the bread and butter item price range ($4-$20). People
seem Ok about putting down a $20 and getting change back. Next step up
is something around $35. Having one or two bread and butter items that
don't make you crazy to crank out is key to making some money. Things
that can be displayed around the workshop or worn on a belt seem to do
well for men. Women are more interested in decorative items like wall
hooks, candle holders etc.
I had a booth at the Northern California Renaissance Faire for a decade
during the '70's. It helped put me through college. But I really
didn't make good money considering the work. However, in those days, it
was the "show" after closing time that made it all worth while!! (smile)
One of the guys who did metal there, back then, seemed to do well with
lost wax cast pewter goblin guys that could hang on a leather strap and
be used as a small weight. They were obviously mass-produced, but cool
and sold for around $6. I bought one and still have it!
