When I make coolware I use straight bee's wax.  Get the item hot rub on wax.
If it's too hot it burns off leaving grey metal.   If it isn't hot enough
the wax will melt but not turn black.  If it's right it will smoke a little,
as it cools the wax will turn black. I wipe it down with a rag as it cools
to make sure I get an even coat and no excess.  If you want to remove it
later just get it hot enough to burn and it all comes off clean.
