You must bear in mind that the original discussion of thermal mass in ceramic chip forges centered on allowing the flame to travel up through the ceramic chips. This greatly slows the flame, increasing "hang time" before it exits the forge. Thermal loading, secondary burn, and reduction of exit speed all work as a synergistic effect. External thermal mass in the walls of a forge or furnace is far less effective; in most designs, negligible.
