I never recommend that people do things--alone--that scare them when handling equipment, whether heating or otherwise. Fear shuts down the mind, which is especially bad when handling tools. It is better to have a tutor walk you through the process step by step. Journeymen would be as rare as hen's teeth if they had to completely self-teach.
