Good point, Walt, and yes, we have looked at various forms of that.
Peggy has a hip mobility problem that may or may not eventually get
better and the double rise variants are just not going to be good,
especially considering that the main object here is access for her.
We need a design that allows both feet on the same tread at the same
time.

Yeah. We have double loft doors and stuff can go up that way when the
weather isn't dreadful. I'm thinking of cutting a floor hatch so that
stuff can be lifted in a wire basket or with bantam-weight tackle.
The present plan is 28"+ wide treads, which will be a bit better for
lugging stuff than some narrow spiral stairs I've seen.
BTW, the thick-wall pipe I found is pretty hard. My litle bandsaw cuts
it, but sloowly and the chips come out magnetized so that they cling
to the blade or stand on end on the workpiece. Never saw that before.
