Why aren't folks using propylene for steel welding? Does it require a
new
set of tips or can acetylene tips be used in torches?

Acetylene tips are not interchangeable with any other fuel gas; this is
because the propagation rate (flame speed) is about twice that of every other
fuel gas, except hydrogen, which is even faster yet. In order for tips to be
interchangeable, the flame speeds of different gaseous fuels have to be pretty
close. You can use MAPP tips as propylene tips. You must check with the tip
manufacturer to see if a propylene tip can be used with MAPP, however, because
MAPP has fifteen percent acetylene in it; so the tip must be made from the
right kind of alloy to avoid forming explosive acetylides when exposed to
acetylene content.
