Hastalloy is an alloy in the family of super alloys with tons of nickel
used in the aerospace industry. Jet engine components, and other high
temperature applications use hastalloy, HastX, Rene'88, inconels, etc.
During my tenure at GEAE we built a test cell complex that would
simulated large scale engine compressor outlet conditions for combustor
testing. The cell included an air heater that would heat 216,000 cfm of
air to 1500 degrees at 650 psi. All the outlet piping was an inconel
alloy that was around 76% nickel as I recall. The raw ingots were
$12/lb, then we had to get it rolled into plate, then rolled into 18"
schedule 100 pipe. We also had to get a flow control valve made out of
the inconel, as well as an expansion bellows.
The project only cost GEAE around $35 million..........
