when you use a hydraulic  press it is much more efficient to keep the die
opening as small as possible to reduce the contact time between the work and
the dies.
Try to hold the billet up off the anvil die until the top die is ready to
contact the billet.
this minimizes pattern distortion caused by the temperature differential
between the top and bottom surfaces of the billet.
Bowie's press like everything else he makes is excellent and well made,
