[TheForge] press vs power hammer/fly press

Hey Ralph and all,
I certainly didn't mean to be disparaging when I used the word
"obsolete"...I mean, my lathe was made in 1920 and my drill press was
made by a company that went out of business in 1916. Obsolete is
good--we are blacksmiths after all.
What I should have said was "wouldn't a hydraulic press do what a fly
press would do and other stuff too, assuming one is affordable?" I
guess not. I've never seen a fly press in action let alone used one. I
have been shopping for a press, and I was thinking about a big arbor
press because it looked like it would have the speed, but I guess I'll
look for an air hydraulic unit and maybe a flypress somewhere down the
line since I'm mostly interested at the moment in saving time doing
damascus.
Sounds like the answer to this, like the power hammer v press question,
is that you need one (or more) of everything. One of the many wonderful
things about tools--you can always justify buying more.
Thanks for the info.
