Here's one explanation:
DUE TO WORLD CONDITIONS AND MINES BEING SHUT DOWN IN CHINA,
THE PRICE OF TIN, PEWTER AND METALS HAVE GONE UP. CHINA HAS STOPPED
EXPORTING TIN DUE TO A MINING FLOOD WHICH KILLED OVER 300 PEOPLE. PERU
WHO ALSO EXPORTED TINS HAD A DISASTER AND THEY HAVE STOPPED EXPORTING AS
WELL.
which is from: http://www.miniaturemolds.com/pricelist.htm
I've bought a bit of sheet pewter from Contenti:
http://www.contenti.com/
but they don't list metal prices.
Rio has just about everything, but they can be a little expensive. A
little known competitor (whom I haven't bought anything from) is Indian
Jewelers Supply: http://www.ijsinc.com/history.htm
After steel this past year, it sounds like a pretty minor price increase!
