Someone gave me an old muzzleloader that had been under a bed for ages,
and it was the same. I used steel wool soaked in ballistol gun cleaner
and it buffed up real nice. 800 grit wet dry sandpaper with ballistol
polished the mating surfaces. The bore was wet brass brush till your
arm falls off and then the normal cleaning proedure. I suppose you
could use steel wool in there too but it turned out I didnt need to.
Welcome to the east my friend. When I leave my anvil and hammers for
more than a day or two I wipe em all down with a coat of used oil, or
they all get rusty before I get back. They're all dry but outside and
they just rust. All the tools in the shop too with unfinished metal. I
have to clean the oil off the anvil face before I start working, or I
do even if I don't have to (habit from welding i guess)but the time's
worth it to me because letting tools rust bugs me.
