Yep. As a farrier, the most efficient usage of the anvil is with the horn
towards the tongs hand- watch someone fabricate a shoe sometime,
particularly shaping the branches, and you'll see why- consequently, that
tends to be my default. But, I also have my anvil and stump moveable so that
I can rearrange things to suit, if I'm working on a particular project,
including the distance from the forge to the anvil, and the general
orientation.
As far as those of you who leave the bick or a hardy in the anvil when
you're not using it, you deserve whatever damage you do to yourselves ;-)
One of my teachers let me, until I smashed a finger, then explained WHY he'd
let me, and I've never forgotten since ;-)
Meantime, out of curiosity, where to you guys place the anvil in regards to
the forge? I've always placed mine to the left of the forge, because it's a
quick twist to the left to place my work, and my blower's to the right, but
I'm wondering what you guys think.

If it walks like a duck, and quacks like a duck, it is probably not a
