Oh, I see the problem now, you're using the wrong kind
of anvil.

I started using a german pattern anvil about 5 or so
years ago.  I don't care for london pattern anvils
anymore.  I've never missed the step either.

You shouldn't leave the hardy in the hardy hole,
unless you are going to use it.  When you're done with
it, take it out.  I used to work with an old man who
had started blacksmithing in the 1930's.  He was
missing the little finger on his hammer hand.  You
know why?  Cause he left the hardy in the hardy hole,
and forgot it was there.
