First in Windows Explorer go to C:\WINDOWS\Start Menu\Programs\StartUp and
see what is in the startup file. You can right drag any thing that you do
not recognize to the desktop and when asked select "Move". If you find that
you need any thing that you have moved, you can move it back the same way.
Defrag, restart the computer in DOS mode and then type DEFRAG.
