Heat and draw a taper, reheat  until a magnet doesn't stick (critical
temp) and quench in oil.
Put in vise wearing safety glasses ect tat end sticking out of vise to
see if it bends or breaks, if it bends reheat to critical and quench in
water of salt water and then do the bend/break test.  If it still bends
it is mild steel

       would anyone know what type of metal piano tuning pins are made
of?I 
was given a box full and they appear to be great stock for mini punches.
