My roommate, Rob has been being kept up to date on your hammer, and this is
what he suggests:

For the tachometer, a phototach. Can be purchased from McMaster-Carr for
60.00 to 80.00, more accurate than a mechanical, and no messy gear ratio or
diametrical equations.

Also, he says there are lots of cheap diesels in junkyards.
