The salesman sets the 'asking' price.  The agreement between the buyer and seller set the real price of the object.  You know that if you sell blacksmithing services.  Doesn't matter if YOU think it's a fair price, you also need to find a BUYER at that price or it doesn't sell.  
And you only need to be knowledgeable about purchasing items if the dollar amount means something to you.  If I have millions to spend, I don't care how much a gallon of milk is........I just get one.
