Given the prevalence of "blacksmith's disease" (the tendancy of blacksmiths
and other metalworkers to accumulate tools, often to the point of fiscal
irresponsibility or in excess of storage capacity) encouraging us to continue
to buy tools is foolhardy indeed. But a corollary to your statement above
is that never let not having the exact tool for the job stop you from doing
something. Don't have a power hammer? Infect a friend with the blacksmithing
meme and have him strike for you. No forge? Dig a hole in the ground and 
improvise. No anvil? I know one smith who went to a gravestone cutter and
used one of their scraps of granite for an anvil for a while. 

Banging metal around is fun, no matter how you do it.
