[TheForge] Brooms and Welding Cast

Peter,
I may regret it later, but I've pretty much decided to oxy-acet. weld it using cast iron filler (Kast Weld 111). Why? (1) Well, because I've never done it before, and it will be a new experience. (2) It will match the color better than brazing.

This piece has been welded at least twice before. So, I don't feel guilty about being the first one to break it. Since previous repairs were by some kind of welding, there is no brazing filler to interfere with my weld. I don't know if the previous welds were done with done with nickel rod or something else. But since my break was at the margin of one of the welds, I plan to pre and post heat to try to reduce stress in the vicinity of the new weld.

It may all come to grief and sorrow. But, life is an adventure.

Aubrey

Aubry: If you are repairing a bar like piece rather than a plate
or wheel, the effects of thermal distortion matter a lot less and
you can be much looser about pre and post heat. Brazing ought to
be the easiest and quickest in that case...just don't overheat
the cast before you lay the brazing rod on a well fluxed surface...PF
