Hi Mike, I always appreciate your litterary genius........it's always worth
reading........if only for the entertainment factor alone. :-)
I found years ago that a rotary phase converter is pretty much mandatory if
your gonna consider buying old industrial machines be it power hammers,
compressors, grinders, etc.
Once you have the phase converter - the fear of three phase is behind you
(once you get it wired up that is) just having it don't count.
The mention of " an affordable whatchamacallit -- phase converter?" should
be considered as a "rotary" phase converter - not a "static" one. The
static ones, yes, are cheaper - but when motors under a load like a lathe,
chainfalls, or air compressor are used - the rotary phase units are a must.
The statics only deliver about 75% of the power needed under a full load -
so the motor heats up and quits on you......or worse - fails.
Ralph

Ralph> Mike, I was wondering who Gloria Mundi was..........
I stole the play on words from Robertson Davies' novel The Fifth
Business. The lead character refers to having loved three women in
his younger days: Gloria Munday [gloria mundi, splemdors of the
earth], Agnes Day [Agnus Dei, Lamb of God] and Libby Doe [left as an
exercise for the reader :-)].
This admittedly trivial literary device was much maligned by the
hoity-toity critics but they hadda pull their punches a bit,
considering that, though he never won, Davies was twice nominated for
the Nobel in literature.
ObSmithing: I think I have a shot at a 400 PSI compressor for $200.
Has a 3PH motor so once again I would have to punt. Maybe this one is
small enough for an affordable whatchamacallit -- phase converter? --
someting that looked just too compicated for my 15+ HP air hammer.
The compressor rig has what appears to be a good motor but no switch
gear, air tank or plumbing.
