I'm not a welder but do a bit of it for my own use.
When my DC welder is working I like the 7018. It doesn't work at all for me
with the AC welder.
For general repair and fabrication I like 6011 (or as my son would say 1109,
he looks at things differently).
I haven't had very good luck with 6013. I would lay down what I thought was
a nice weld and then when I chip off the flux it would be horrid. It tends
to jump from one side to the other and not stay in the middle. I'm sure it's
my fault but thats what happens when I use it.
If I have to weld anything thinner than 16 guage I use oxy/act. The 6011
tends to blow through on the thin stuff.
On really big stuff I use a mystery rod that I got off a tail gate. It has
markings on it but they don't seem to match up with any standard numbering
scheme. They may have been custom made for a factory somewhere or just a
manufacturer that had it's own system. Don't know, but I have a big box of
it and it's nice to have on hand when I need it.
