Frosty,
Thanks for the encouragement. I had been using mainly E6011 because of its deep penetration and ability to work on the dirty scrap I have around the shop. But recently I tried some E6013 with somewhat prettier results. I still need lots more practice.
For those following the saga of the broke cast iron post drill part: Over the weekend I got started forging a replacement part. (Only had a couple of hours in the shop, so I didn't get it finished.) My plan is to try brazing the original after I get the replacement finished.

Lousy welder eh Aubry?
Kind of reminds me of what the horse trainer said about straightening out a
problem horse. His cure, "Wet saddle blankets."
In your case, there's nothing wrong with your welding skills burning rod
won't cure. It's just like anything; given the basic eye hand coordination
to hold the tools properly, everything else is knowledge and practice.

I'm actually better at gas welding than arc welding on small things. I
would like to think it's because I only have an A/C welder, but secretly I
know I'm just a lousy welder.
Okay, so let's assume I'm going to use the O/A torch for this repair. What
are the relative merits of brazing vs. gas welding with cast iron rod? In
use, this piece can be under quite a bit of stress.
