That's a keeper and better than my bit of advice.  However, in a
pinch, I've bought toy corn brooms that were pretty well made, sawed
the handle off short, painted the stub and made an iron handle that
matches the other tools.  To attach the iron to the wood, I split the
end of the iron, drew out longish, thin ears and wrapped them on a
mandrel in a double helix that would screw onto the round wooden
handle stub.

Toy brooms may no longer be available, being as toys that inculcate
the virtues of house keeping in little girls are no longer PC.  Maybe
they'd get popular again if we circulated a rumor that they were essential
ceremonial paraphernalia for Young Wiccans.
