Hey Rick,
The burner is called a ribbon burner. John Emmerling of Gearheart Iron 
werkes
gearheartironwerks at directway.com
copied a burner used in a glass factory near his shop.
He did a how - to article for the Northwest Blacksmith's Assn. newsletter in 
the spring of 2005.
Looks like a good burner easily adapted to any size forge.
I plan to build one in the fall, when the temperature is more tolerable.

Earlier in the summer, I put out a request for ideas on how to build forge
burners for natural gas.  I received a reply from someone who had
constructed a ceramic burner nozzle out of castable refractory.  He sent me
an note off-list that included photos taken during construction.  The nozzle
was rectangular--about 2.5 x 6' long and about 2" tall with numerous 3/8"
holes down thru it (to the best of my recollection).  The ceramic nozzle was
held in a sheet metal manifold and connectedd to a burner made from plumbing
parts.

The beauty of this nozzle is that yeilds a rectangular flame pattern without
the cold spots encountered between "conventional" gas burners.

So why am I writing this?  In July I moved to northern Wisconsin and am
outfitting a new shop heated by natural gas.  I am building a forge which
will be fueled by this source.  In the process of moving, I lost the email
note and contact info for said inventor.  I am most interested in talking to
this person again.  I am planning on building my own version of this burner.
Amoung other things, I would like to know what type of castable refractory
product to use for this application.

As the town folk used to say at the end of the Lone Ranger radio show...
