Ron,
I just fooled around with the railroad spikes, that was a completely seperate operation. I heated up the broken file (a piece about 5" long), drew out a tang, and then worked at forging the bevels (tip and edge) in. I'm flattered that anybody might have thought that I spilt the spike and forge welded in the file, but I'm not that good yet.

Maybe I read too much into it, but he said he heated some spikes and a
broken file and beat on it. I took this to mean he split or grooved the
spike and forge welded the file in to make a skinner... plain rr spikes make
good oyster knives, letter openers, steak turners, etc, but I have my doubts
that a blade of 1030 steel would hold an edge long enough to skin and
butcher an animal of any size.
Kent, just what did you do?
