Exactly, 5k mph is pretty hard to make foam for.
My thought is to design the foam to disintegrate into small beads at about
150 mph.
That way there wouldn't be anything to damage the rest of the bird. Once the
shuttle is on it's way there is no need for insulation as ice won't form
fast enough to be a problem.
