Actually, there is a famous story about Liberty ships in WW2- several 
of them broke right in half in arctic waters, running supplies to 
Murmansk.
It turns out that the cold, along with the motion of the waves, caused 
them to change stucture enough that with the welding techniques they 
were using, the boats just fell apart.
As I remember, different welding techniques solved this problem- maybe 
someone knows the real story.
