I just use boiling water on the plants, a couple of times I've used 
vinegar.  Only works for an young plant, to keep it from getting hold.

Just don't do what my neighbor did when I was a kid: burn it off.  My 
brother walked through the smoke, was a total mess of itchy nasty 
rash.  Learned later that it could have killed him if my family wasn't 
relatively immune to poison ivy.
