Wood works fine but may be a little light weight. I find that they sound
best with more mass. I've used a large disk of lead. Mostly I use a disk of
iron, maybe 4" diameter and an inch think. The sound of steel hitting steel
is unbearable so I will wrap it with several layers of vinyl electrical
tape, rubber, or leather. These will give it a nice mellow tone.
You can also make a metal disk for weight and a slightly larger wooden one
for the more mellow sound. Bolt them together so that the metal provides the
mass and the wooden one, the one that strikes the bell, will provide the
mellow tone.
