	Oh, I'm sure mild will work just fine.  The really old
	ones were wrought iron, I'm sure, and listen to the racket
	those will make.  I would bet that copper and its alloys
	would also do the job and I know for certain that silver
	will do the trick more sweetly than any of the others,
	but that gets a little costly.  THough, for a really fancy
	household, it should be only a couple hundred in silver,
	but 3/4" silver bar would have to be milled up custom.
	That, or you get a 5# bouillon and draw it cold into, say,
	3/4" round.  That would be wild.  Hell, I probably have
	enough sterling scrap to do it. :)
