Shop Vac's  are universal motors (they have brushes) they will run on 
AC or DC and  can be controlled with a dimmer . They make good 
blower/vacuum motors but are noisy and not that good for higher power 
loads like pumps.

Ya, know Jim is right.  I thought about it after I sent it.  The shop vac is 
somewhat quieter than a lycoming jet engine.  And Never use a light dimmer for 
high load systems. 

Time enough for sleep in the grave.
