	You can get non-thoriated electrodes.

	Anything that is radioactive you don't really want in your
	body.

	Just get the other electrodes.  I don't mess with alpha
	emitters.  The materials used in smoke detectors are
	strong enough to burn your skin with relatively small
	contact.  Life is hazardous enough, why push your luck?
