Mounting the old drive as a slave on the new system is the best method.
Just make sure you have jumper settings correct for each drive, or the
machine will say it can't find any drives at all.  That can get a bit scary,
if you're not used to the vagaries of computers.

Burning CD's is okay; you can use rewritables so you don't permanently burn
CD's for temporary storage, but it can get tedious.  I have about 14 GB pf
music files on my PC, so that would be something over 20 CD's.
