Being a computer guy, I do 5-10 of this kind of upgrade every month. I just
pull the old hard disk out, pull the wires off the CD (or DVD) drive in the
new computer, connect the old hard disk to those wires and transfer files
at normal hard disk to hard disk speeds. I usually transfer the whole hard
disk into a sub directory on the new drive rather that trying to pick and
choose things to transfer. Its easier to go back and delete stuff you don't
need after several months rather than hooking up the old drive every time
you realize you need a few more files off of it.
On the old computer, I usually do a little clean up first: clean out the
trash can, clean out the internet cache files, clean out the temp
directory, etc. The disk to disk transfer usually only takes 15-20 minutes
total time.
Obligatory Warning: If you are not comfortable plugging and un plugging
things inside your computer, please don't blame me when something goes wrong.
