Subject: [TheForge] 1/4" Square - Oops!
I meant to reply to the last e-mail about 1/4" square
hot rolled key stock, but I mistakenly hit delete.
I don't think there is such a thing as 1/4" square hot
rolled key stock. I might be wrong, I've been wrong
once before. I think that key stock by it's very
nature and the purpose it's intended for is cold
rolled.
I started blacksmithing in the late 1970's working at
Colonial Williamsburg. When I first started working
there, they were still getting 1/4" square hot rolled.
They also got 7/16" round hot rolled which I haven't
been able to find in about 20 years. By 1979 or 1980,
we could no longer get 1/4" square hot rolled. We had
three major metalworking groups at Colonial
Williamsburg (I'm not counting folks like the gunsmith
or the wheelright), the historic area blacksmith shop,
the production shop, and the maintenance shop. We
bought a lot of steel, so it wasn't a case of we were
a small customer. And, we couldn't get 1/4" square
hot rolled in any quantity.
