I just realized I've made some small pieces myself. For mokune, I forged
down some pure iron to about 1/8" x 2" strips and then just used a
manual jewlers rolling mill.
I took the metal down to approx. 22ga. The cool part about pure iron: it
dosen't work harden. No carbides to break up smooth crystal planes in
the metal. I went from 1/8" all the way down without annealing! If you
only need small pieces this might be a viable but somewhat tedious way
to get them.
